July is National Picnic Month and there is no better way to enjoy the great outdoors than to head outside with a basket or rucksack full of food goodies.
The origins of picnics is somewhat of a mystery, but thought to originate in France in the 18th Century, purely as an indoor aristocratic pastime. When the French aristocracy had to flee the revolution they introduced picnicking to the countries they fled to. Over the next century picnicking was taken up by the middle classes, grew in popularity, spread across the world and was taken outdoors. The original idea of a picnic was to share food and drink, each person attending brought an item of food or drink with them, to be enjoyed by all. Over the years this has changed to more of eating an informal meal outdoors. To find out more about the history of picnicking please use this link.
