Making the most of a mild January

January can be a funny old month.  A bit flat from the excitement of December and too early for spring, January is usually time for a bit of hibernation.  However, with the weather being so mild this year, it’s been great walking weather!
This year inspired by my friend and walking buddy Christine, I have signed up to the Walk 1000 Miles challenge with Country Walking magazine.  You can sign up too!  Walking is a great way of getting fit without too much exertion, or having to join a gym.  I walk to enjoy nature, get some fresh air, shake off the cobwebs and get away from the office.  If you visit the Walk 1000 miles website you can learn more about the benefits of walking and sign up for your challenge, track your progress and add yourself to the map of participants.

I’ve got no excuses now I have to get out there and walk, I’ll keep you updated on progress.

One of the joys of living in the North East is the ease of access to the countryside, your never far away from green fields or the sea.  Whether you’re in the wilds of Northumberland with its breath taking big scenery, or in Durham with its beautiful riverside, you can always find somewhere to walk.

This weekend the weather was gorgeous and we enjoyed a lovely walk around Herrington Park, close to the Penshaw Monument.  It has spectacular views of the surrounding countryside, ponds full of all sorts of ducks, geese and swans, activities for children and monuments to local miners.  It’s a great place to enjoy on a beautiful winters day.

Let me know if you sign up to the 1000 mile challenge I'd love to hear your progress.  Wherever you live and walk, take the time to unwind and enjoy a walk outside,  don’t forget to pack your Pocket Perch!

Happy walking
